External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met German Member of Parliament Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the strengthening of India-Germany bilateral relations and key global developments.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Jaishankar posted: “Always nice to catch up with German MP @juergenhardt. Discussed our bilateral cooperation and global developments.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Germany remains one of India’s most valued strategic partners in Europe, with a relationship that has deepened steadily since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1951. The two countries commemorated 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2021.
Regular high-level engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has further strengthened this partnership. The two leaders have met six times in the past two years, including at major global forums such as the G7 Summits and G20 Summit.
Their most recent interaction was during the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy (June 2024), where they reviewed ongoing areas of cooperation. Previous meetings include the G20 Summit in New Delhi (September 2023) and the G7 Summit in Hiroshima (May 2023). Notably, Chancellor Scholz paid a standalone State visit to India in February 2023, the first by a German Chancellor under the Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) framework.
At the 6th Inter-Governmental Consultations held in Berlin (May 2022), co-chaired by PM Modi and Chancellor Scholz, the two countries signed several agreements across diverse sectors including:
- Clean energy
- Health
- Agroecology
- Skill development
- Mobility
A major outcome of the IGC was the Joint Declaration of Intent on the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), aiming to bolster cooperation in sustainable development and climate action.
Separately, EAM Jaishankar also met Slovenian Ambassador Mateja Vodeb Ghosh for a farewell call.
“Pleased to receive Ambassador Mateja Vodeb Ghosh of Slovenia this evening for a farewell call. Appreciate her contributions towards building stronger ties. Wish her the best for future endeavors,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
The meeting underlined India’s ongoing diplomatic outreach and engagement with both European Union member states and strategic partners across the continent.
